There were plenty of tears on Rihanna’s highly-anticipated interview last night on Oprah’s Next Chapter.
The 24-year-old singer broke down when she opened up to the talk show queen about her relationships with former boyfriend Chris Brown and her estranged father.
But there were also plenty of happy moments, and one huge surprise during the one-hour special.
Big surprise: Rihanna surprised her mother Monica during her interview with Oprah last night, by gifting her with a five bedroom mansion in Barbados
Rihanna shocked her beloved mother Monica Braithwaite when she gifted her with a brand new five bedroom home in Barbados.
And of course sneaky Oprah, who is known for thrilling numerous guests on her talk show with grand gestures of generosity, was the perfect person to be in on the act.
To make the big reveal, in true Oprah fashion, the talk show host invited Monica to the home under the false pretense that she would be doing an interview alongside her daughter for the show.
Moment: Rihanna gave her mother the mother of all gifts during the one hour special
Shocked: Monica couldn’t believe it when her daughter told her the home was her own
As Monica arrived at the lavish mansion with her son and Rihanna’s brother Rajad and the singer’s aunt, she immediately was taken with the gorgeous abode.
As the group went outside to look at the pool, Oprah told Monica that her ‘good daughter’ had a surprise.
Hugging her mother, Rihanna nearly broke down in tears as she said: ‘Oh mommy you are so cute.

Looking at her daughter, Monica was both confused and concerned.
‘No I am not pregnant! Stop that. “She is like. Oh what is it,”‘ Rihanna laughed.
Before composing herself once more, it was then that the pop star made the big reveal, turning to her mother and in a serious tone told her: ‘I wanted to do this for you for a very long time. You have been such an amazing mother, example, soldier, and you get to walk away with the key to this house tonight.’
Looking around shocked, Monica couldn’t help but cry out.
Tour: The family and Oprah took a big tour around the five bedroom mansion
‘Oh my goodness, Ohhh… Are you serious? Oh my goodness,’ she shrieked, throwing up her hands to her face.
‘Yes. This is all you girl. Look around. Look at the pool,’ Rihanna said beaming with pride.
Monica then realised that the queen of day time television was her very first guest in the home.
‘I have to have a picture of you hanging on the wall. My first guest is Oprah it is amazing!’ she gushed.
Oprah revealed that Rihanna used her grandmother’s fine china as inspiration in decorating the living room in the stunning five bedroom house.
Beautiful: The mansion sits on the idyllic island of Barbados
After taking her mother for a tour through the abode, the family and Oprah sat down and enjoyed a glass of champagne.
Monica told Oprah what made her so proud of her daughter.
‘Because she has remained so humble and so close to her family. She is the same Robyn to us. That is what I am very very proud of,’ she said.
And she revealed to the talk show host that she is ‘not yet’ pressuring her daughter to find a new man.

The family, along with Oprah, then joined in as Rihanna made a toast.
‘I want to toast to one, your first trip to my home. Now to her home, to her house. And to family man, to good vibes, to love to happiness, to everybody. Cheers!’ she said.
Earlier in the interview, in vast contrast Rihanna took Oprah to her old family home where she grew up from the age of five up to 16, when she first left Barbados to pursue a career in music.
Humble beginnings: Earlier in the interview, to show just how far she really has come, Rihanna took Oprah to the family home where she grew up from the age of five up to 16
Allowed inside the tiny bungalow by the family who now lives there, Rihanna and Oprah took a look around.
The father told Rihanna and Oprah that people often come by and take photos of the small home.
Rihanna also discussed a lot of dark moments on last night’s interview with Oprah, especially in regards to her relationship with singer Chris Brown, who notoriously physically assaulted her in 2009.
The singer confirmed to the talk show host that the pair ARE still ‘very close friends’ and that despite leaving her battered and bruised in the road after a vicious beating, she ‘still loves him.’
Where it all started: Rihanna lived in the family home for 11 years
And in words that must have felt like a stake through the heart of Brown’s current long-suffering girlfriend Karreuche Tran, she added: ‘We love each other and we probably always will.’
The television special for Oprah: The Next Chapter showed Winfrey describe the fall-out from the horrific night after a pre-Grammy party in 2009.
After re-counting the events, a tearful Rihanna, real name Robyn Fenty, opened up about where the pair’s relationship now stands.
Of the incident in 2009, Rihanna conceded: ‘It was embarrassing it was humiliating… I lost my best friend,’ she said.
But the singer admits since the restraining order was dropped against Brown in February 2011, the pair have been working on their friendship, having seen each other as recently as last month in St Tropez.

‘We’ve been working on our friendship again and now we’re very close friends,’ she said. ‘And that’s not anything we’re going to try to change.’
But she said it’s still difficult to see her ex, because her feelings are conflicting.
‘It’s awkward because I still love him.
‘My stomach drops and I have to maintain this poker face and not let it get to the outer part of me. I have to maintain it and suppress it,’ she explained, adding, ‘When you don’t understand those feelings you can make a lot of mistakes.’
Rihanna said the pair are not pursuing anything romantic, noting Brown is in a long-term relationship (with model Karrueche Tran), while she is single.
Still, the memories of their relationship, she predicted, will linger.
‘I think he is the love of my life. He was my first love.’
Highly anticipated: Rihanna discussed all aspects of her life in the one hour special
But she remembers, in part, where it went wrong: ‘We were very young and very spontaneous. We were falling in love and going at a really rapid pace. We forgot about ourselves as individuals,’ Rihanna explained.
After falling into what she described as a ‘dark place’, reflected in her music, her fashion choices and her attitude, the singer said she was finally able to make peace with the violent end to their romance by rebuilding her relationship with her father, Ronald Fenty.
‘I was so angry at him. I was just angry about a lot of things from my childhood. And I couldn’t separate him as a husband from him as my father,’ she said, acknowledging he was violent toward her mother, Monica.
RIhanna’s parents split nearly two years before she left Barbados for the States at 16. The singer admitted her father’s ‘addiction’ tore her family apart; although she did not elaborate on his substance abuse.
Now, after bridging the gap, she says she has moved on from the scandal with Brown that has cast a shadow over her career for the past three years.

‘I have to move on,’ she said. ‘I have forgiven him. It took me a long time. I was angry for a long time.’
But that reconciliation comes with the desire to know her ex has also healed since the fracas.
‘I truly love him, so the main thing for me is that he’s at peace… I care. It actually matters [to me] that he finds that peace,’ she said.
Prepared for a backlash, she continued: ‘I can’t tell people how to feel about it. They’re entitled to feel angry because it wasn’t a good thing that happened. But I have forgiven him.’
